Mittwoch Mix - Not A Place of Honor

After listening back to ANOHNI's 2016 album, Hopeless, I was inspired to make this mix. Current events seem calculated to induce rage and hopefully this mix will be a cathartic indulgence for others as well.

It joins some similar mixes I've put together in the past, including I WANNA SCREAM OUT LOUD, Armageddon is by our side and The Mountain's Ash, the River is Steam...

Thinking of the damage being done day by day and what will be required to repair it, I decided to draw on the long-term nuclear waste warning messages for inspiration...

This place is a message... and part of a system of messages... pay attention to it!

Sending this message was important to us. We considered ourselves to be a powerful culture.

This place is not a place of honor... no highly esteemed deed is commemorated here... nothing valued is here.

What is here was dangerous and repulsive to us. This message is a warning about danger.

The danger is in a particular location... it increases towards a center... the center of danger is here... of a particular size and shape, and below us.

The danger is still present, in your time, as it was in ours.

The danger is to the body, and it can kill.

The form of the danger is an emanation of energy.

The danger is unleashed only if you substantially disturb this place physically. This place is best shunned and left uninhabited.

Mittwoch Mix - hwæt! Wait until you know the time is right on time / The end is near

 The (probably not) long awaited return of my annual Birthday Mix tradition...

Back in 2021, I was turning 38 and compiled the Better In My Day Mix, a selection of songs that is equal parts tongue in cheek memento mori, peculiar birthday allusions & references with a few aspirational touches to complete the mix.

Then in 2022, with my 39th birthday, I compiled a baker's dozen of songs all released the year of my birth, 1983, vertrocknet im Sonnenlicht.

For my 40 birthday in 2023, I went all out, first I gathered songs that I love and that were recorded before I was born. The very slightest theme of Memento Mori threads through many, but not all, of them, gathered together as hwæt! Before My Time.

Then I compiled the hwæt! Top Forty... a mix of 41 songs one a year for each year I’d been around, plus one for that 41st year. As with all of my birthday mixes, there is a tiny bit of Memento Mori, but mostly these are just songs I like.

Last summer, this blog was on a hiatus, but now, with my 42nd birthday approaching, I've assembled a mix to revive this tradition, hwæt! Wait until you know the time is right on time / The end is near. Mostly but not all, released since my last birthday. A little less of a memento mori mix, but those melancholy motifs remain.

Mittwoch Mixes - Still I won’t apologize - I took nobody with me / not a soul

Getting back into the swing of things and posting some new Mittwoch mixes... The world might be on fire but I can distract myself by putting together these little mixes and perhaps they'll find a few other listeners too...

First, a mix inspired by track 13 from Symphony #1 for Dot Matrix Printers. I found myself bobbing my head along to the groove of this track and was inspired to put together a mix of other songs on the avant garde/experimental end of my collection that are still hopefully somewhat accessible to less esoteric listeners.

The second mix was inspired by a re-listen of Chris Connelly's SHELTA and "Fly Away Blues," which got me thinking of other songs with 'blues' in the song name, so I assembled a mix of them. While none of the thirteen are really 'blues' songs, they're all in conversation with the genre and the more traditional song structures made this mix feel like a good contrast to Still I won't apologize.

Mittwoch Mixes - It's Been a Long Way to Carry On... / give me infinite skies

Two mixes for this Mittwoch Mix post...

My wife and I saw the Brutalist last month, which was excellent, and I knew that Brady Corbet had directed Childhood of a Leader and Vox Lux, which had soundtracks by Scott Walker. But it wasn't until the credits rolled that I realized he'd also dedicated the film to Scott Walker. It's a gorgeous and unsettling film, and it put me back in the mind of Walker's music, which is also gorgeous and often unsettling, so I decided to finally finish the mix of remixes and covers I'd been assembling of his work.

I cheated a little by including the Scott Walker + SUNN O))) version of "Lullaby," that he originally wrote for Ute Lemper, but since it was the final track from his final non-soundtrack album, it also seemed fitting and was a cover in its own way.

Mittwoch Mix - The Swiftest Blade - hwæt! Nerd Mix Volume I

 Another long percolating mix that I've finally compiled, The Swiftest Blade features a collection of songs outright inspired by TTRPG, fantasy literature, RPG video games and other songs that are at least nerd adjacent. 

Going ahead and labeling this as Volume 1 as I'll certainly be able to assemble other mixes of nerdy songs in the future...

A point of pride for this mix is that when Loot the Body was planning out Hex Volume 2 he asked for suggestions of classic D&D modules for inspiration and I was one of at least a few who suggested Against the Cult of the Reptile God, which is undoubtedly one of my top five D&D adventures.

hwæt! schlürf

This mix has been percolating since November 2024 or honestly probably from the first moment I heard "Menschenentsafter." Even though my mixes have been quite Blixa heavy lately, with the Gelb - Alien Pop Music series every other Monday, I wanted to get this mix out now that it was complete.

So without further ado, here is hwæt! schlürf [slurp], a mix of exquisite mouth-sounds, stacked heavily with contributions from Blixa Bargeld, but featuring a few others. I tried to stay away from shrieks and screams and focus on the less common noises. Needless to say, this mix is not for anyone who suffers from misophonia...

Mittwoch Mix - building somebody else’s sanctuary

Listening back to my last Mittwoch Mix - There's Nothing to Read, Nothing to See, which doubled as a kind of best of 2024, in a mostly adjacent way, I realized that aside from Pig and BIG|BRAVE I hadn't really put any of the heavier music I listened to last year on it, or at least heavier, electric guitar first music.

This mix started as an attempt to return to my annual Vision Board/Yearly Send Off mixes and meandered into a mix that is a bit melancholy at turns and unexpectedly a bit nautically themed.

Though it's not a best of 2024, it features tracks from some of my favorite albums from 2024, the exception being "The Feast" off of ØXN's CYRM which was released in late 2023 and new to me in 2024 and Crime & the City Solution's acoustic version of "The Bride Ship," which is incredible alternate take on one of my absolutely favorite songs.

hwæt! And when you least think of you…

I had originally thought that I'd put out a mix of songs with exquisite mouth sounds, inspired by Teho Teardo & Blixa Bargeld's incredible "Menschenentsafter" but I need to spend a little more time sifting through my collection to make sure I've truly assembled the best of what I have.

So instead, I built a mix around another of the tracks off of the incredible album Christian & Mauro, "Bisogna Morire" or 'you must die', which is a more cheerful memento mori than the name might suggest. The resulting mix is by turns playful and melancholy, autumnal and heartening, and hopefully a balm for the listener's soul.

Over a year after I first mentioned this mix was in the works, here it finally is, 'Without Song All Will Perish'. A thematic mix of tunes about songs and music based around Nick Cave & the Bad Seed's classic "The Weeping Song".

Joined by 12 other songs that touch on musical themes, though Sister Machine Gun's "Smash Your Radio!" feels very nostalgic and probably would be something like "Smash Your Spotify!" today.
