I usually put the mix titles in the post titles for my Mittwoch Mixes, but these two mixes, one much more than the other, are inexorably tied to this last month for me. Honestly, it feels like it's been a year since my last mixes, Mittwoch Mixes - Working & Zurück, when it's barely been a month and a half...
Before I get to the mixes, if you haven't already, go donate to Stand With Minnesota, which I think will unfortunately be needed for months or years after this fascist federal occupation ends, if it ever does...
Inspired by "Warships" off the final full Foetus album, HALT, hitting hard in January, I started putting together a mix. I quickly decided I didn't want it to just be another angry, metal and industrial mix, since I've done a few of those before, so I tried to have it be more inspiring and hopeful.
It took a little time, but once I realized I could pair "Warships" with Lizzy & the Triggermen's version of "When That Man Is Dead and Gone" that things started to come together.
I hope that the mix conveys the steely resolve, moral courage, hopefulness, and even a little playfulness, that I think has flourished in the resistance that has grown here in Minneapolis and Minnesota.
Have you heard that the warships are approaching
And the storm clouds are gathering in the sky
Well my mind is consumed with fear and loathing
But I'll fight for its control until I die
Til I die
Til I die
And the preachers with their worships are controlling
Trying to change the law to suit their alibi
It's a web of rules and raw misinformation
But I'll fight for my rights until I die
Til I die
Til I die
I can see the smoky plumes on the horizon
And the warships just seem to multiply
And their crucifixes look like iron crosses
I will push back hard against them til i die
Til I die
I will push back hard against them

The second mix, And Hell is where the action is... has been long simmering, building off Shellac's "I Don't Fear Hell" and capped off by Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter's gospel classic, "ALL OF MY FRIENDS ARE GOING TO HELL".
Seeing the violence, cruelty and callousness of the ICE & CBP goons in my beloved city put the thoughts of Hell in my mind, they certainly all deserve to find themselves there if it exists. If it doesn't, I hope they never have a quiet nights sleep & that every meal they eat has just a little bit of shit in it.
