Alien Pop Monday 00.15 - erkannt das Sehnen die Knoten hält

Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the Fifteenth track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "Gesundbrunnen."  Here it is, after 15 mixes, the end—complete with 195 tracks and 131 artists featured, a corpus of what feels, to me at least, to be Alien Pop Music.

There is a passage in KOLLAPS by Melle Jan Kromhout & Jan Nieuwenhuis that speaks to the concept of Alien Pop Music that I re-read just before finalizing this mix, as I made the decision to have "Sehnsucht" (desire) off of Kollaps, their fisrt EN album, serve as the final song that I think serves as a nice conclusion to this series...

Desire is the breath that fuels life and connects the inside of the living body to the world outside. Air spreads around in the depths of the lungs, where it branches out. Oxygen flows through blood and brains until it is used up and residual gas is exhaled to make room. Just like this Einstürzende Neubauten feeds itself with sound. The band is an organism that mutates with each consecutive song. It inhales sound. It lives on sound. Just as every breath is an extension of life, sound is Einstürzende Neubauten's sustenance.

This way, the band absorbs other kinds of music and makes certain elements their own [...] With each song, Einstürzende Neubauten wanders further into unknown territory and encounters different sounds and music to reorganize themselves.

Alien Pop Monday 00.14 - Fossiliien, die wir beide sind

Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the Fourteenth track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "Trilobiten." After seven months of this project, we've reached the penultimate mix.

Off the top of my head, "Trilobiten" is one of the most 'folk' songs Neubauten has ever released, up there with "Ein Stuhl in der Hölle" and this mix definitely leans a little in that direction.

Alien Pop Monday 00.13 - Allet hat sich uffjelöst

Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the Thirteenth track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "Ick wees nich (Noch nich)."

I'm particularly pleased with this mix, I think it is strangely cohesive in both musical language and lyrics. Perhaps I will be the only one who feels that way, but these thirteen songs really do seem to me to be of a set.

Alien Pop Monday 00.12 - Sing für mich in gelb

Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the Twelfth track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "Aus den Zeiten."

“In another solar system, Einstürzende Neubauten would be as famous as The Beatles are in ours,” says Blixa Bargeld

Music and colo(u)r are constants in Blixa's lyrics, and though there are songs that more directly quote the Beatles (e.g. "Headcleaner."), I decided instead go with "MoDiMiDoFrSaSo" for the final cap of this mix to contrast with "Aus den Zeiten."

Bargeld: Listening to mindless music on the tour bus radio. I developed a simplified version of an upbeat, stupid pop song made up of "MonTuesWedThursFriSatSun", with "FriSatSun" sung enthusiastically every time. That was the idea for this piece, with various quotes from other songs and regulations in the lyrics. It's a little bit like a comic strip.

Alien Pop Monday 00.11 - I try to drag myself out

Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the Eleventh track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "Planet Umbra." Of course after remarking that the last mix was one of the longer ones, this mix ended up exceeding it in length.

I had an unexpectedly busy Memorial Day weekend, so I decided to delay posting this mix for a week, but I plan to go back on schedule next week, so instead of the every other Monday, everyone will get two Alien Pop Monday's back to back. Then after that, I'll go back to the every other week schedule mostly because it means the final mix will post on my birthday.

This was one of the hardest mixes to put together, because it's built from the same improvisational rampen as "The Pit of Language," but I think it turned out well in the end and feels poignant for this moment in time. Only four more mixes remain, and while that means there are two months of this project left, it does feel a little odd to be in sight of the end.

Alien Pop Monday 00.10 - We cast no shadows

Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the Tenth track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "Planet Umbra." Of course after remarking that the last mix was one of the longer ones, this mix ended up exceeding it in length.

I think that I've finished assembling the mixes, but I'm sure that I'll change a few things around as I continue to put out the remaining mixes.

Alien Pop Monday 00.9 - Words, syllables and fragments

Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the Ninth track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "The Pit of Language."

By happenstance this ended up being one of the longer mixes, and another mix that came together relatively easily. Even though I'll continue to publish the mixes every other Monday, I'm nearly done assembling them, with two mixes that need one final song added to complete them unless I change my mind about some.

It's a little unsettling that by coincidence Alexander Hacke announced he was leaving the band the weekend before I'm posting this mix, since "Babel" might be the last of his 'solo' tracks that made it into the mixes. The band has announced they'll continue and my first full album was Ende Neu, so I am hopeful there will be more Einstürzende Neubauten to come.

Alien Pop Monday 00.8 - Wo kann ich denn noch hingehen?

 Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the eighth track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "Everything Will Be Fine." Most of this mix came together very quickly in January and February when I was first assembling these mixes, but as time passed it became more and more fraught and tense with meaning.

Though as Blixa addresses in the excellent interview with the Quietus, the tile was always cynical and wrestling with the chaos of the world.

9 The Legendary Pink Dots Choose Premium : First Prize
10 haloblack everything inside
11 Darksol Burn
12 Unwoman 99 Luftballoons
13 Einstürzende Neubauten Floorpiece / Grundstück

I tried not to let the mix become too bogged down in hopelessness, though it is a darker mix. As bleak as it is, it ends with "Floorpiece / Grundstück," which Blixa has described as a curse the band tried to place on the head of their former label, and I hope that the energy of curses finding targets who deserve affliction and misfortune is coming in our near future.

I had also been extremely tempted to use Andrew Liles' 'version' of 99 Red Balloons off of Colossus Part One, but ultimately having one 50 minute track that would be almost as long than the rest of the mix felt too unwieldy, so I went with Unwoman's excellent cover instead.

Still, you can consider the Liles' version a 'bonus' track, its re-worked lyrics seeming very apt for the moment...

Software souvenir

It's balloons shop red

The one bag of sky

Ninety fighters, the one nine

Something's a something

Meet from dust

Think nine

Just go

The line hero

Worry it up jet

Message focusing flash

High ministers with boys

Hurry, we've the summer

Knights tech free

Eye the machine

I panic. Classify war

Super nine its eager sky

One springs in dawn

Super it

Scrambling. Clarify the floating

Somewhere captain president

Everyone's sparks alert

Scurry of pretty decisions

Here in the city, in the bells

One little you

Alien Pop Monday 00.7 - Enn’ ich deinen Lügen hinterher

 Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the seventh track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "Besser Isses." We're now officially over halfway through. The lyrics apparently began as a potential duet and morphed into what Blixa describes as a song "breaking up with God and the universe."

Alien Pop Monday 00.6 - In situ

 Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the sixth track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "Isso Isso." Though it's only the sixth track, it reminds me that I've been doing this project now for 12 weeks, compiling 78 tracks and 58 different artists so far.

I'm very aware that for this mix I honed in on a couple fragments of the lyrics of "Isso Isso" and built out from there, resulting in a pretty (pre-)historical and mythological mix.

Alien Pop Monday 00.5 - I put a cryptic message on the door

Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the fifth track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "Before I Go." This mix came together surprisingly quickly. With this fifth mix, we're already a third of the way through both the Rampen album and the project.

# Artist Track

11 Alexander Hacke Sugarpie

13 Einstürzende Neubauten Perpetuum Mobile

Slightly off the topic of the mix, but several of the songs are from albums that were in constant rotation my final year of college. I got Perpetuum Mobile the spring of my Junior year, Die Warzau's Convenience came out the fall of my Senior year and Alexander Hacke's Sanctuary was the soundtrack for my last few weeks of college, constantly in my old discman as I finished my final papers and exams.

Alien Pop Monday 00.4 - Kaum noch erkennbar ist

 Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the fourth track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "Es könnte sein." With a cover of a Nick Cave song, tracks from Björk, Sonic Youth and the Cure, this is probably the most terrestrial pop of the Gelb mixes, but hopefully it's balanced out by some more esoteric tracks and fits together cohesively for others and not just me.

# Artist Track
1 Einstürzende Neubauten Es könnte sein

9 Sonic Youth Shadow of a Doubt
10 The Cure If Only Tonight We Could Sleep
11 Scott Walker A Lover Loves
12 The Legendary Pink Dots This Could Be The End
13 Einstürzende Neubauten Abstieg & Zerfall

The whispering thread through these tracks is pretty obvious, but there were other connections that drew the songs together for me that I'd like to think will shine through for others as well. Also, I cannot recommend METRONIA enough to other fans of Einstürzende Neubauten.

I had been at a loss for the final closing track for this mix until I read Kromhout & Nieuwenhuis write about Abstieg & Zerfall in their book on KOLLAPS... "Noise is the connector, the medium of choice. Without it, there would be no music, no message and no relation." I had been listening to Kollaps as I read and I went back again and listened to the song and it found its place here on this mix as I kept those words in mind.

Alien Pop Monday 00.3 - Just give me the missing ingredients

 Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the third track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "Pestalozzi." Also, it's not really Monday anymore. I did not set myself a reminder and with all of the *gestures vaguely at rapidly deteriorating world*, well, I ended up finishing work yesterday and playing Zelda Tears of the Kingdom while my snuggling with my cats instead of posting this mix, though I have since set myself some reminders to stay on schedule in the future.

# Artist Track
1 Einstürzende Neubauten Pestalozzi
2 Extra Life Haven't Learned a Thing
3 Teho Teardo & Blixa Bargeld Dear Carlo
4 Shirley Collins Hares on the Mountain
5 Lankum On a Monday Morning
6 Mick Harvey A Suitcase in Berlin
7 Chris Connelly The Heart Has To Ache Before It Learns To Beat
8 Nina Nastasia I Write Down Lists
9 Mario Batkovic QUIS EST QUIS (feat. Colin Stetson)
10 Sister Machine Gun Call It Mine
11 Seeming Learn to Vanish
12 Coil Departed
13 Einstürzende Neubauten Alles

Re-listening to this mix, it ended up being a little bit melancholy which I didn't expect, but which seems to fit to me. Perhaps important to the mix is that "Pestalozzi" references a 20th century Scottish educational reformer. Also, both "Haven't Learned a Thing" and "Dear Carlo" are exactly 5 minutes and 21 seconds long, a fact that is probably only interesting to me and that I only noticed after I had finalized the track order. The alternate title I considered for this mix was Anything that isn't crap, but I decided against it as these thirteen tracks are decidedly not crap and I did not want anything to even hint at that association.

Alien Pop Monday 00.2 - But it wasn't there

 Another Alien Pop Monday...

This mix builds off the second track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music), "Ist Ist." This track was actually the one that got the series started as I noted while re-listening to Tago Mago that "Oh Yeah" reminded me of "Ist Ist." A few days later, I had a similar feeling with Kim Gordon's "I'm a Man," and after that I started being more systematic/committed to noting down when a song reminded me of a track off Rampen (apm: alien pop music).

# Artist Track
1 Einstürzende Neubauten Ist Ist
2 Yeah Yeah Yeahs Isis
3 Chris Connelly Stowaway
4 Akron/Family Holy Boredom
5 Nurse with Wound / Faust Hard-Rain
6 The Fall I Am Damo Suzuki
7 CAN Oh Yeah
8 ÅRABROT Deadlock
9 Kim Gordon I’m A Man
10 The Young Gods Un point c’est tout
11 Scott Walker 'See You Don't Bump His Head'
12 Edward Ka-Spel The Never Man
13 Einstürzende Neubauten Was Ist Ist (Live at Palast Der Republik)

As with the first mix, I'm hesitant to make explicit the connections that drew these songs together for me, though I suspect some amount of red string is fairly obvious with the track titles of "Isis" and "Was Ist Ist"... Though re-listening to the mix as I finalized the order of tracks, I was much more struck by the sonic connections than the scattered but more explicit connections of titles and lyrics.

Alien Pop Monday 00.1 - Alles schon gesungen

A young man with a thin goatee and long hair dyed black stands in a black t-shirt with a silver Einstürzende Neubauten printed on it. He stands awkwardly next to the statue of Mithras found in the British Museum.
A photo of the author as a young Neubauten fan, May 2005

I have been a fan of Einstürzende Neubauten since discovering them on the AP Presents: Industrial Strength Machine Music compilation shortly after it was released in 1999. It didn’t take long before I tracked down a used copy of the 1998 Mute CD release of Ende Neu and by the time Silence Is Sexy was released in May 2000 I was devoted enough that I made sure to pre-order the special edition with the bonus disc from my local Best Buy.

E.N. have remained for all that time, more than half of my life now, my absolutely favorite band. They consistently top my most listened to artists each year on Last.fm and currently remain at the top of my all time artist scrobbles at 14,617 scrobbles, barely edging out the Legendary Pink Dots, the other immensely prolific band I have been obsessed with since discovering them.

Following along as a supporter while Neubauten put together 2024’s Rampen (apm: alien pop music) album, I knew I’d love the music—I definitely enjoyed the previews and the live rampen or improvisations they were sharing from the last tour that would form the basis of the new tracks, but when the final title was announced I was a little underwhelmed… The subtitle “ (apm: alien pop music),” it rang to my American ears as a little shticky and didn’t settle well for me until I read the interview in the Quietus after I’d listened to the album a few times.

“At first I wasn’t sure if calling the new album RAMPEN was such a good idea,” says Bargeld, “Which is why I gave it that subtitle, "Alien Pop Music", inventing a new genre, APM. Don’t let pop music be given popularism by the majority – there is a minority pop music. Pop music for the different girls, pop music for the different boys, pop music for the aliens.”

Wesley Doyle. “Loving The Alien: Einstürzende Neubauten Interviewed.” The Quietus, https://thequietus.com/interviews/einsturzende-neubauten-blixa-bargeld-interview-2/

Sometime over the summer of 2024 those words were still rattling around in my skull and I started to note down when a song reminded me of a track off Rampen (apm: alien pop music). Sometimes it would be some sonic quality, some quirk in the instrumentation or tone—sometimes it was a lyrical connection, or a connection in subject matter, but other times, most times perhaps, it was simply a gut feeling that there was some connection, a spider-web thread tying the tracks together in some ineffable manner.

In that spirit I am in the process of putting together 15 mixes, one for each track from Rampen (apm: alien pop music) to create a personal oeuvre of Alien Pop Music. Each mix will start with the track off Rampen and end with another track from Einstürzende Neubauten, drawn from the entire range of their career, that fits to me as of a piece with the song from Rampen. In between will be eleven songs by other artists, sometimes featuring members of E.N., that fill out the volume of Alien Pop Music.

Hopefully there will be surprises, even for other fans of Einstürzende Neubauten, and I can draw enough from the wide breadth of my musical collection to avoid anything too obvious. I am aware that there is a distinct possibility that I am the only person on the planet who will find this endeavor at all interesting, but still, I will see it through, posting a new mix every other Monday until I have exhausted the tracks. Much like my series on Nurse With Wound's Shipwreck Radio, this is something I do for myself first.

Then, without further ado, here is the first mix, Alles schon gesungen.

# Artist Track
1 Einstürzende Neubauten Wie lange noch
2 Gloria Night Biting
3 The Legendary Pink Dots Is It Something I Said?
4 Pigface I Can Do No Wrong
5 dälek Prayers for Rain
6 The Young Gods Everythere (acoustic)
7 Moon Duo No Fun
8 Marissa Nadler & Steven Brodsky In The Air Tonight
9 Rogér Fakhr Everything You Want
10 Wire Forever & a Day
11 Grumbling Fur The Ballad of Roy Batty
12 Deradoorian The Illuminator
13 Einstürzende Neubauten Von wegen

Because the connections between the songs in this mix seem so obvious to me, I hesitate to spell them out, and I might only for further mixes if they feel interesting or obvious or so exceedingly opaque that some clarity is needed. But, especially for this first mix, I want to leave the ties unspoken, so that if anyone else listens they’ll draw their own conclusions, which might, and hopefully could be, entirely unrelated to the threads that I think tie these tracks together.
